| A rock formed from the sedimentary
process, underground and underwater, comprised primarily
of calcium deposits of shell and bone. Travertine,
which was created from limestone formations, has
a more pitted surface because of its proximity to
hot, bubbling springs.
Limestone is used for a variety of applications
because of it's versatility. It can be intricately
carved, turned for columns or balustrades or used
as flooring for example. There many different
colors of limestone and the textures vary as well.
Travertine, a variety of limestone formed in pools
by the slow precipitation of hot, mineral-rich
spring water, is generally used for flooring applications.
The "holes" characteristic of travertine
was created when carbon dioxide bubbles were trapped
as the stone was being formed. Although the classic
travertines are recognizable by their dark colors,
dark reds are available to dark brown veining.
